History is still in the making in the Town of Matthews NC. Before the area was settled, the land was untouched woodlands filled with large stands of trees on gently rolling land. In 1800 the early settlers arrived and a small farming community sprang up which grew cotton as its primary crop. The area was originally known as Stumptown due to the remains of the forests which were cut down to make room for farmland. Once the railroad came to town the name was changed to Matthews in order to honor the director of the railroad, and by 1879 the town was officially incorporated. The town of Matthews flourished with its main economy being to provide supplies for farmers such as cotton gins and general stores.
With the growth in Charlotte after World War II, it was inevitable that Matthews economy began to expand, and with an influx of people came the opening of many new businesses and the building of additional housing developments. Today many companies including a Fortune 500 company have their headquarters based in Matthews North Carolina.
