 Cornelius History

The quaint Town of Cornelius NC sits directly on the pristine shores of Lake Norman.  Originating as a farm community in 1893 which produced cotton, this little town grew over the years.  The initial change which established the town’s business sector more securely was the construction of a cotton mill to convert cotton grown locally into cloth.  The town of Cornelius is thus named after the original investor of this cotton mill.

Just as influential in the town’s development and growth through the years was the creation of Lake Norman by damming the Catawba River in 1963.  With an endless source of hydroelectric power and additional recreational activities for its residents, the town couldn’t help but expand.

Cornelius NC Things To Do

With less than ten square miles to the town, most of it sitting directly on the shoreline of beautiful Lake Norman, Cornelius offers a charming home-town feeling for its residents with breathtaking views of the lake around every bend.  With its delightful blend of history and modernity, Cornelius North Carolina has a restored downtown area boasting a variety of boutique and specialty shops, as well as more contemporary shopping centers dotting the town.  Find everything from flower shops to yoga facilities, surf shops, day spas and wine houses.

The town is known for its southern hospitality and offers a variety of Cornelius entertainment options including the Michael Waltrip Racing Headquarters, a local amusement park, live music at the House of Jazz, art and design at the Cornelius Arts Center, skateboarding facilities, as well as golfing, dining and events at The Peninsula Club.
